Why Patients are Included at the Connected Health Conference

Several years ago, my friend Lucien Engelen of Radboud University Medical Center in the Netherlands, decided to create the designation #PatientsIncluded to indicate conferences that intentionally welcomed patients to be fully engage. We at the Personal Connected Health Alliance (PCHAlliance), since we focus on consumer-facing health technology, decided that we should seek this designation for the Connected Health Conference.

Here is our progress to date as we plan to apply for this important designation:

  1. We have involved patients in the design and planning of the event, including: Nick LiBassi from the United Spinal Association, William McIvor from Senior Link, and Robin Caruso of CareMore.
  2. Patients are participating in the delivery and are present in the physical audience.
On the main stage, James Vlahos, Wired Magazine and Creator of 'Dadbot' is delivering a keynote presentation about creating a bot conversation-making program that shares the life story of his late father.

We also have patients participating in several panel sessions:
- moderated by Nick LiBassi, United Spinal Association

  • Caregiving in the Age of Connectedness -  panelists Carrie Shaw who cares for her mother with early Alzheimer’s, and William McIvor from Senior Link
  • The Digital Opportunity in Rare and Complex Diseases - will feature Michael Weamer, The Marfan Foundation
  • PGHD End User Experience: Patients and Providers - includes Steve Van, Patient Champion
  1. We are providing travel and accommodation expenses. Five travel scholarships – airfare plus two hotel nights and free registration. The application form is now online. Deadline is September 10. Also, you can apply for the co-located event, The Society of Participatory Medicine Conference.
  2. Disability requirements will be accommodated.
  3. Free streaming video: We will have some sessions streamed via Facebook Live on the PCHAlliance account. We will have main stage events filmed and posted after the conference

In addition, the Connected Health Conference will include these events: WEGO Health Awards for patient leaders will be announced in the exhibit hall on Thursday, October 18; and the Society for Participatory Medicine will host a meeting as part of the conference on Wednesday, October 17.

As the leading connected health event, we are pleased to include  patients, to provide important perspective and motivation.
