When is Enough, Enough? Evidence in Connected Health

Many in the medical profession view wearables, health apps and non-medical grade devices as lacking evidence and, therefore, are reluctant to adopt these technologies in their practices. For some startups in digital health, this has meant “death-by-pilot” -- running out of funding while doing pilot studies, before they can expand their services. In the past few years, there have been notable exceptions and here are some examples:

  • Digital diabetes prevention programs – despite the lack of reimbursement by Medicare, companies have successfully collaborated with payers and employers to scale their solutions.
  • Digital inhalers for pulmonary conditions – startups have demonstrated the effectiveness of providing feedback data to patients and parents of young patients, reducing the use of rescue inhalers and emergency department visits. As a result, several are collaborating with pharma companies to make these digital tools standard for some medications.
  • Workplace health promotion – although some programs have shown no progress, improved designs are showing results.
